Cycle Training

Road Safety training is one of the most effective ways of promoting cycling. Training is not intended to impose restrictions on behaviour, but to increase skills and confidence.

Dudley's cycle training scheme is delivered by a team of instructors. It is based on the National Standards for Child and Adult Cycle Training. These standards fall into three levels, as outline below:

Level 1: You will be able to make the manoeuvres listed as a pre-requisite to a road trip.

Level 2: You will be able to make a trip safely to school, work or leisure on quiet roads.

Level 3: You will be able to make a trip to school, work or leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions and road features.

A full list of the outcomes for each level is available using the National Standards link on the left

Training is carried out through our schools courses, and with groups and individuals through our personalised training programme.

The English Regions Cycling Development Team had this to say about our cycle training program in 2003- "The authority currently offers training to primary and secondary school children and to adults. Some 39% of primary school children receive mainly on road training and there is a commendable target to increase this to 75%. While secondary school children can currently receive the primary school course on request, the authority is investigating introducing a more advanced course. Few adults take training. All training is carried out by professional instructors who are mainly cyclists."

Primary Schools

All primary school training is provided free of charge. Schools are contacted every other year to invite them to register. Training takes place in Year 3 and Year 5.  To take part, pupils will need a suitable bicycle and existing skills covering Level 1a of the National Standards

Class based trainingOn Yer Bike - available on loan!

As resources restrict the number of children practical training can be offered to, we have a range of alternatives to offer.

An excellent video (On Yer Bike) can be borrowed, covering all aspects included in the Safer Cycling course. For older children a pack called "Forever Cycling", which includes activities and a video, offers a dramatic alternative. Packs of worksheets and project ideas are also available.

If your school would like a cycling focus day (including a practical challenge) contact us to discuss what we can offer.

Holiday Courses

We try to organise Safer Cycling Courses for young people aged 9 - 12 during school holidays, for those who have not had the opportunity to take part during the school term. Times and location vary, but there is normally a £5 registration fee. Please contact us to find out what dates we have planned.
