Questions with answers
Why
does Front Page produce a double space when I press the return key?
The return key on Front Page produces a new paragraph
. If you want
a new line
then hold down the SHIFT key when you press return.
How
do I transfer web pages from one site to another?
Drag and drop or cut and paste will not work in FrontPage. Instead use
the Publish option in the File menu. You can use this to copy part of your
intranet (but not the homeweb) to your main web site.
Examples:
To publish the Artweb on your intranet to
your school site:
Use Front Page Explorer to log onto your intranet and then choose artweb.
Choose Publish from the File menu
Choose More webs and enter your school site: www.schoolname.dudley.gov.uk
Enter you web username "schoolname.dudley"
Enter your password and the site will be published.
nb You may want to publish the site to a new folder. In this case use
www.schoolname.dudley.gov.uk/foldername
To publish to your MyWork area use publish to N:\MyWork\filename
When
I try and open my website, I get a message that "The folder
'www.school.dudley.gov.uk' isn't available".
This can happen if you forget to add the full address to the Site name: box
including http://
FrontPage 2003 is the default web editing client
for DGfL schools.
Front Page server extensions (FPSE) are installed on
your school website and also your intranet.
FPSEs are used when accessing your website with
FrontPage using a method called HTTP.
FPSEs also give access to the additional features
such as hit counters and search forms.
What are FPSEs?
http://www.microsoftfrontpage.com/content/ARTICLES/FPSEs.htm
However, it is known that the use of FTP can break FPSEs.
If FTP is the only method used to update the website this is not a problem.
If both Dreamweaver and FrontPage are used to edit the site, then problems are
likely to arise.
A call to the helpdesk is required if your FPSEs have been broken, but clearly
they would break if FTP were used again.
If you wish to use a web editor that uses an FTP client, such as that built into Dreamweaver, to maintain your website, one of the following options should be implemented in school:
1) Create the site on your local disc in Dreamweaver but use FrontPage to update the site. This is a simple process using drag and drop or cut and paste. FrontPage is only used as a transfer mechanism, and is not used to edit pages.
2) Do not use FrontPage at all to upload your website. You may continue to use FrontPage to create pages but the pages would need to be imported and then uploaded by Dreamweaver.
3) Use the FTP option within FrontPage upload files. Select it from the Publish menu of FrontPage.
