The Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Transport has recently announced a joint £50 million initiative to help reduce the congestion outside schools. This initiative will reward schools that write and implement a School Travel Plan with cash awards, typically £5,000 (primary) and £10,000 (secondary).

What is a School Travel Plan?

It is a document that sets out a school's plans to improve health and safety and the local environment around the school. It may include walking, cycling, public transport initiatives, engineering, educational measures,
travel awareness and school policy measures. Often it will lead to a Safer Routes Project.

Who can help?

Dudley has gained funding to provide a School Travel Plan Co-ordinator, Linda Tromans, to assist schools to write their own Travel Plans. Road Safety Officers will work with schools to run Safer Routes to School projects. Ideas generated by pupils can be used to bid for funds to help create or promote Safer Routes to School.

Travelling to School

What are Safer Routes Projects?

They are to encourage and enable children to walk, cycle or use public transport through a package of measures.  These measures can include education, training, promotion of sustainable travel and improvements to the infrastructure. The Safer Routes to Schools projects also aim to improve road safety and reduce child casualties while improving children's health and social development.

Safer Routes to Schools projects involve:

bullet       the whole school community

bullet       local residents

bullet       local authorities

bullet       health and education workers

bullet       police

These initiatives are often contained within School Travel Plans which aim to improve safety and encourage travel by more sustainable modes.  As well as linking with national  safety objectives, the programme also supports walking, cycling and public transport strategies in reducing car use.

Funding to develop Safer Routes Projects  is available through the local Transport Plan.

There is a particular need to consider transport for disabled children and the opportunities for them to switch from special transport to independent travel in the growing number of accessible buses / trains.  Attention to the walk from home/ bus train stop to school should be incorporated in the School Travel Plan (even where there are no current pupils in these groups).

Additional  information on Safer Routes can be found in the Safe Routes section of the Sustrans website.
