National Standards – description of levels and outcomes

Dudley's cycle training is based on three key documents

The standards were developed by the National Cyclist Training Reference Group, which is made up from representatives of interested bodies and organisations, including LARSOA, CTC and RoSPA.

Each level builds on the previous one, and outcomes are progressive. .

Level 1a            First time rider – you need support to ride a bike

You can get on and off the bike without help

You can start off and pedal with help

A3

You can stop without help

A4

You can ride along without help

You can start without help

You can make the bike go where you want to

Level 1b           You can ride a bike without support but need better control

You can start and stop without help

You can use your gears

You can stop quickly

You can swerve to avoid objects

You can look all around, including behind, without wobbling

You can signal right and left without wobbling

B6

You can look behind and signal at the same time without wobbling

Level 2              You have good control. You are now able to use your skills on the roads

You are aware of everything around you as you ride including people behind you

You understand where to ride on the roads you are using

You can pass parked or slower moving vehicles

You are able to pass side roads

You can turn right into a major road and left into a minor road. You are able to make a u-turn

You can turn left into a major road and right into a minor road

You are able to take the lane when you need to

You can decide if a cycle lane is going to help your journey

12 You can explain why you have made decisions and therefore demonstrate understanding of safe riding strategy
13 You have a basic understanding of the highway code, in particular how to interpret road signs

Level 3              You are confident to do some local journeys independently. You are now ready to look at more complicated situations.
