Mobile speed camera visits school Pupils from a Sedgley school are checking out the West Midlands Casualty Reduction Partnership’s new mobile camera van this week. The pupils, from High Arcal, who recently took part in a road safety course, will be shown how the equipment works and how the partnership selects and advertises the sites to be used.

The camera van uses a video system called Lastec, which is capable of providing pictures of offending vehicles at the roadside within a few seconds together with the relevant data overlaid on the image. Enforcement takes place inside the vehicle, through windows at the rear. The camera records information from a section of road up to 300 metres away. When a vehicle passes the camera above the speed limit the video records an image of the vehicle, including date and time of offence, location, and speed of the vehicle. |

Councillor John Woodall, cabinet member for transportation who will be attending the viewing said: “It is vital we explain to the next generation of drivers the danger of excessive speed and the reasons for the need to enforce speed limits in the most dangerous locations. This equipment will enable this to happen. “It will detect speeding motorists and will hopefully encourage more people to stick to the speed limit.” The pupils will be shown how the equipment works and how the partnership selects and advertises the sites to be used.
