Podcasting Support

What is a podcast?
A podcast is a one or more multimedia files (typically MP3), distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players and personal computers. Podcasts are usually broken into episodes. If you subscribe to a podcast you can automatically download future episodes. Think of a podcast a subscription to a magazine that is automatically delivered to you.

How to listen to Podcasts

Software
In order to subscribe to a podcast, you will need an application called an aggregator. Example aggregators are Apple Itunes, Doppler and Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). Dudley schools will be able to use IE7 soon but Doppler is available now. To request Doppler (which is free) on your system, please call the helpdesk.

Subscribe to a podcast
Podcast are delivered using something called an RSS feed.
RSS feeds can be found by looking for the RSS logo.

When you visit a web site that offers podcasts you will usually see either a button labeled ‘XML’ or ‘RSS’ and some text that will look something like this ‘http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/feeds/highfieldnews.xml’. The text contains the location of the file that has all the information that allows the aggregator to download the mp3 files and manage your subscription.

To subscribe to a podcast with Doppler:

• Select the text that gives the location of the podcast information file and copy it.

• Run Doppler and click on ‘Add’.

• A window opens. Now, paste the location of the information file to the URL box and  press Finish.

You have now subscribed to that podcast. Press 'Retrieve' and Doppler will now download the information file and first mp3 file.
Once it has finished you can listed to your podcast in the right hand window (Posts).

How to create a Podcast

All Dudley schools have a site license for Podium which can be used to create a podcast really easily. To request Podium on your network, please ring the helpdesk. The RM/DGfL Curriculum Support team offer support and also run courses on podcasting with Podium.
