KICK START- Information for teachers
- This resource has been prepared as part of the Dudley Year of Maths
- It is targetted at years 5/6 as an early morning / registration time
'Kick-Start' for the brain.
- Each morning we will present a mathematical problem based on a topical news
item from CBBC.
- We hope the news item will be of general interest to classes and the problem
suitably 'challenging'.
- Our intention is to provide a daily challenge for the rest of the year.
- The problems have been created to support an identified need. They may be of
use in preparation for KSII Maths Testing.
- We envisage Years 5/6 projecting the news item onto a wall, whiteboard or
smart board for
a) groups to discuss and develop a strategy for solving the problem
b) groups reporting strategy used for solving the problem to the whole class -
who then discuss and select the 'best' solution (should there be one!)
- Groups will need to identify the relevant information from the 'rubbish'-
highlighting the relevant from the rubbish on a whiteboard may be useful to help
groups decide on the maths needed to solve the problem.
- We hope that groups will have time to discuss their solutions and build up a
bank of strategies for future use.
