What is good provision for gifted and talented?

In many ways the
things which provide good provision for able children also provide good provision for all
children. However, that's not much help. If as a school you are just beginning
to more formally address the issue of gifted and talented below is an eleven point

Eleven Things to do
| 1 | Appoint a gifted and
talented coordinator who will take a leading role in developing the schools gifted and talented provision. |
| 2 | Have a system by which gifted and talented pupils are identified and registered. |
| 3 | Whilst appreciating
possible sensitivities involved, ensure that the register of gifted and talented pupils is made available to all teachers. |
| 4 | Create opportunities for
all teachers to share information regarding g & t pupils in order that they may gain a picture of the whole child. |
| 5 | Ensure that gifted and
talented pupils are effectively challenged in the mainstream classroom through differentiation. |
| 6 | Have in place whole school
activities which enrich and extend gifted and talented pupils. eg. clubs, societies, educational trips, competitions, visitors to school, enrichment days, musical and sporting opportunities. |
| 7 | Develop ways in
which success and achievemnet in the school is celebrated in order to establish an ethos that learning is 'cool'. |
| 8 | Make use of both in-house and outside agencies for training and provision. |
| 9 | Ensure procedures
are in place in order to assess the progress made by gifted and talented pupils and this is used to inform planning and to advise the pupils. |
| 10 | Invite the governing
body to nominate one governor who will oversee the school's provision and liases with and supports the gifted and talented coordinator. |
| 11 | Ensure that plans
for the gifted and talented are included in the school's development plan. |
